ELECTIVES
All Team Enrichment participants may choose to participate in activities that
cater to their personal interests through weekly electives that include: The Harlem
RBI Report, a youth-written and youth-produced newsletter with a circulation of
more than 6,000; and the “Youth Leadership Council,” where peer-elected
youth serve as an important youth voice of the organization as they review Harlem
RBI policies and procedures, interview prospective staff, advise Program Directors
on youth views, and represent their peers at external Harlem RBI events.
HARLEM RBI REPORT
Harlem RBI's quarterly newsletter, the Harlem RBI Report,
is written, edited and published by Harlem RBI youth. The Harlem RBI Report is
a favorite activity among participants interested in exploring the Harlem RBI
community and its constituents. Youth meet one night per week to write, edit,
and publish the quarterly newsletter now famous with friends of Harlem RBI. Current
and past issues of the Report are now available online in PDF format.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
Harlem RBI's Youth Leadership Council is comprised of four youth-elected participants
from each grade, 9th - 12th. The representatives make decisions about, and participate
in projects to benefit the Harlem RBI community. Harlem RBI believes strongly
in giving youth ownership in the organization by creating a sense of belonging,
an opportunity to represent themselves and their ideas, and by giving youth the
meaningful role of decision-maker in many Harlem RBI program issues.
Activities for the Council have included:
youth leader elections for each of Harlem RBI's junior-high and high school level
teams, development of an organization-wide youth code of conduct, a series of
highly anticipated meetings to design team uniforms and practice jerseys, participation
in staff led focus groups to better inform Harlem RBI program development and
policy, designing and implementing youth recruitment strategies and youth “try-out”
procedures, interviewing prospective staff members, organizing a staff versus
youth softball game, and representing Harlem RBI youth at special events, including
the organization's spring gala, “Bids for Kids.”back to top
